Conformal coatings extend the useable life of a PCB by protecting against contaminants and preventing short circuits and corrosion.
It seems like I'm being hit with coincidences from all sides at the moment. Just a few days ago, for example, my chum Alan Winstanley emailed me to ask a question about PCB coatings.
I waffled on for a while in response (the real trick is to get me to stop talking). I was a little pushed for time, however, so I only wish I'd known that Nicole Faubert was going to write an article on this topic over on our sister site -- the EDN PCB Design Center.
You really should check out Nicole's Roundup article on PCB Protection/Coatings. In this column, Nicole discusses Cytec coatings for improved safety and environmental compliance, Dow Corning coatings for circuit protection in severe service environments, Dymax (no relation) light-curable coatings for streamlined manufacturing, and Henkel eco-friendly coating materials for harsh environments.
