Max, I'm flattered.

Here's today's thought, attributed to John Alfred Spender and others:
The longer I live the more I see that things really are as silly as they seem.

Why does this make me think of the Internet of Digital Things?

@MB - what is that fancy looking instrument beside you in the red pic - a frequency counter for tuning your guitar?

Enjoyed the song BTW, I'm sure a lot of techies will identify with that!

Smiling faces
David Ashton   4/17/2014 11:57:41 PM
@Max.... "If I see David Ashton's smiling face...."

I've recently had to get new passport and dcriving licence photos done.  I had to take my glasses off (which makes me look even uglier than I normally do) and they tell you not to smile.   Frightening.

Those who have seen this story before, forgive me for retelling it here.....years ago I lost my driving licence and had to get a photo done in a hurry.  The photo guy should have said to me "Mr Ashton, I think you should comb your hair first"  but he didn't.  The result was truly hilarious.  It was great when I went through a police roadblock or hired a car.  "Mr Ashton, can I see your driver's licence, please?"  "Sure, but ONLY if you don't laugh at my photo."   "Of course I won't!"   I'd hand the licence over and the recipient - especially in the case of car hire girls - would usually be convulsed on the floor laughing.  I still have it somewhere, I'll see if I can find it and post a pic....

And like Betajet, I am flattered that SOMEONE looks at my incoherent ramblings....:-)

@David: ...The photo guy should have said to me "Mr Ashton, I think you should comb your hair first"  but he didn't...

This reminds me of a photographer I used to know -- we worked at the same company. This was a big organization with 5,000 employees at our site alone. His primary job was photographing electronic equipment -- circuits boards, graphic cards, computer systems, etc. And he was absolutely brilliant at it.

He also took people's passport photographs. The problem was that he was not a "people person" -- he didn't chat with you to put you at your ease -- and he didn't get you to sort out your hair or straighten your collar ... or anything that would have helped the pictures. The end result was that all of his people photos looked like rejects from The Muppet Show :-)

I have a funny photographer story to share: Years ago when I was working for a print publication (I know, that dates me back to the dinosaur age) we contracted with a photographer in another city to take the cover photo. When the photos came in, we were weirdly surprised to see the photos were out of focus. No, we weren't trying for the "soft" imaging known in some industries, but it was quite peculiar. So we contacted the photographer to express our displeasure and asked him to retake the images. Dang, if when they came back in they were still out of focus! We concluded that there was no other explanation other than that there was something screwy with the photographer's vision.

This reminds me of the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet. He painted a lot of the same scenes over and over again through the years. The thing was that he had cateracts that grew worse with age, and his paintings reflected this in several ways, including loss of focus and detail and changing colors. From the Internet:

"He did not perceive colours as intensively as before, which initially made him chose significantly stronger hues of blue and green shades as the weaker shades were filtered out by the yellowy cataracts. Red shades appeared dirty to him, pink insipid and he found it hard to differentiate between similar colours."

I know a hilarious story involving Mae West and a photographer.  Alas, it's a bit risqué for a family site like Geek Times.

I found following:

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but the improtant questiob is: Which thousand?

No picture has universally shared and understood meaning.

Words are not peferct carrier of communication, but are better than images.

This day writing is lost art. Let people endeavor in art of writing.

I also hastened to comply. Inquiring minds would like to know however, why I need to have a phone number in my profile. Fortunately I have a number that I use for such purposes. Not sure why I woild want to answer a call from EETimes unless they want to know where to send the check. And I already entered the address for that...

Ah, Grog -- one version of that is watered-down rum -- they used to serve rations of that in the Royal Navy -- my granddad told me about it.

Well this is a test post to see whether my picture doesn't show up on on posts now because it's being vetted by the NSA, or because it only shows for new posts.
