No Lidar is very good design. With Lidar, car does not look good and can also be easiliy tempered. This looks promising work for future car.

I can't wait until 2030, we need smart cars now, this year up here in Oregon. If The manufacturers make a smart car that is smart enough to drive properly then I'm all for it. As an example I sat near a school exit today on a main thru way waiting for 3 light changes while the socker mom in front of me stopped on the thru street and let a stream of mothers dropping their kids off out the exit with the result being that 20 or so cars in front and behind me who could have made this light on the thruway sat thru 3 light changes while this courteous mom did her thing. Courtesy is one thing and I can see letting 1 car thru the exit at a time but more than 10 is ridiculous and I don't care to waste anymore gas no matter how cheap it is than I need to. So if a smart car can sense a drivers stopping for no valid reason by looking at a green light ahead and other situations on the road and start driving instead of stopping then I'm all for it.

Actually, my bet would be that it would be more like an actual American living room. Recliners in front of a TV with an Xbox and full Facebook access and plenty of extra-large cupholders. It's not like anybody actually speaks face-to-face anymore...

I especially like the fuel cell drivetrain.

And sure. Once we accept the premise that cars will be autonomous, at least on some roads, then the next step is to make a car inside more like one of those fancy limos. You know, where passengers are facing each other, while sipping their mixed drinks. The leap of faith is only that full autonomous driving will be achieved by 2030.

...the cost of Lidar would be too high and its appearance, aesthetically unappealing.

When I read this my immediate thought was that the cost of Lidar was a very minor issue at most and that aesthetics was the real issue. This car doesn't look like much of anything was rejected because it was too expensive.

This is pretty far out there, but it is worth considering a rethink of automotive design. If the car does all of the driving and is practically guaranteed to do so safely then a lot of what we assume about cars can legitimately be questioned. Why shouldn't they be designed more like living rooms with entertainment options to pass the time?

That degree of safety is an assumption, of course. I think that we can get there but doing so by 2030 seems a bit aggressive to me.
