I had a quick chat with Telelogic, a company that makes UML modeling software. The company recently released a modeling package for telecom infrastructure. UML modeling is a foreign concept for most DSP engineers; as is for good reason. It is mainly used to model large, complex systems with many interacting components—not a description you could apply to the typical DSP application. However, this description is a good fit for telecom networks, which carry voice, data, and video traffic, and have to deal with a mind-numbing number of protocols and standards. Making sure all these pieces work together is a major challenge.
