As David says -- thanks for the Reality Check -- it does us good to remember those less fortunate than ourselves

I'm planning on really getting into my second childhood this year ... I need to pick up the pace so that I can squeeze in a third childhood sometime down the road :-)

When my mom was 5 years old, on Sunday afternoons she would walk from her parents house to her grandparents -- this trek covered a couple of streets and a park ... if she was late no one thought anything about it ... after all, who would do anything to a little girl? How things have changed...

Very good point Rich and thanks for the reality check. My favourite charity in Australia is Young Care - aims to provide a good place for kids and young adults who need constant care (the only alternative here is an old age home). www.youngcare.com.au

There's a lesson in the above comments. "It's never too late to have a happy childhood". One of my favourite sayings. So if you get the opportunity to have yourself some fun, without hurting anyone else, DO IT!! And don't worry about what anyone else says.... Happy New Year, everyone.....

No fireflies where I grew up, but we would see how many bees we could catch in a little Gerber's baby food jar, and then try and let them escape without getting stung (usually that meant throwing the jar up in the air with the lid loose and running like heck)! It was nice growing up in an area that was not overdeveloped. We were able to build a few tree houses, and even install a zip-line on one of them. All unsupervised of course.

Dave, Max, you are so right - childhood is/was the best time of life, but one does not realize it until childhood is long gone. For me it ended at my first job during high school (TV repair) when I understood why the boss (a decent guy) was so cynical about the customers. I learned fast...

You guys are right. I too had a great childhood. There's a story I tell (too long for here) about a friend and I who took a train and rode our bicycles around a national park in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for a week, when we were 14 years old. Phoned our folks every couple of days when we got near a phone box that worked. We were soooo lucky. How many kids these days - anywhere- get that sort of fun?

I was so lucky -- I had wonderful parents and a wonderful childhood -- I thought everyone grew up that way... ...as I've grown older I've also grown to discover that many folks have really crappy childhoods ... I'm I'm not just talking about the horrors in developing countries -- even in places like America and Europe a lot of kids suffer all sorts of physical and emotional abuse... ... I only hope things work out for them ... starting with this Christmas and the New Year...

You are right -- don't try this at home :-)
