Photos on an online forum claim to show the casing of the Apple iPhone 5S model, said to be coming soon.
Just two months after the long anticipated release of the iPhone 5, new pictures have surfaced on forums claiming to show the iPhone 5S.
The images, which were leaked on a forum run by iPhone5parts don’t show much more than the exterior casing of the phone, which unsurprisingly looks almost identical to the iPhone 5. Rumors have been swirling that Apple intends to launch a slightly upgraded iPhone in early 2013, as the firm speeds up its product cycles to compete with Android rivals like Samsung.
The pictures show the back cover of an iPhone with a prototype serial number and different screw placement.
UBM Tech Insights analyst and teardown expert Allan Yogasingam said it was hard to determine how reliable the product leak was, as Apple is notorious for running a tight ship at the design level. But once products start being prototyped and manufactured, the same level of security does not apply.
“We’ve seen leaks of this nature before, as parts of the iPhone 5 were shown to the public months before the actual handset surfaced,” said Yogasingam.
He added that in the case of these specific photos, it was indeed very possible that we could be looking at the casing of the iPhone 5S because the “S” series of handsets are usually minor iterative improvements on the previous generation; usually at the internal level.
Yogasingam said he would expect the 5S to feature a processor that improves upon the Apple A6X, and that the updated model could be the first Apple handset to feature a quad-core CPU and quad-core GPU making it more in line with the handsets currently offered by Samsung (Galaxy S3) and others using quad-core Nvdia Tegra 3 application processors.
It’s also believed that Apple may opt to integrate a better camera, wireless charging capability and NFC in an updated model.
This may be good news for Apple fans, some of whom were mildly disappointed by the relatively small upgrade they felt the iPhone 5 offered from the iPhone 4S.
