Reduce the time required to reproduce parts considerably by rotocasting instead of repeatedly 3D printing. The RotoMAAK is a low-cost solution for rotocasting on Kickstarter.
For people who make props at home, casting is still the king of manufacturing processes. Even if a 3D printer is available, the current limitations in surface finish and material selection mean most people will eventually make a mold and cast their product anyway. RotoMAAK is a well done rotocasting solution that is just getting started with a Kickstarter campaign.
Rotocasting is a method of spinning your mold in different directions at the same time in order to spread the material evenly over all of the internal surfaces. These machines are typically quite expensive, but the results can be worth it. While many rotocasting companies make DIY versions, these versions often have issues with structural integrity and balance. The last thing you want is a capsule full of rapidly hardening epoxy being flung across your home workshop at high speed when your rotocaster goes off balance.
The RotoMAAK is using precise, laser-cut parts to bring down the cost of manufacturing and ensure that everything lines up nicely. It looks pretty good, too. Through Kickstarter, you could get a complete kit for $550.
As you can see in the video above, the workflow would go as follows:
- Model your object in software
- Print your object (or really make it any way you want)
- Create a mold using that object
- Cast multiple products from that mold using the RotoMAAK at a considerable time savings over 3D printing
Personally, I could see this being quite useful, especially for edibles. You could print a set of custom chocolates, then use a food-safe latex mold to cast multiple edible pieces for distribution. This would allow you to use your non-food-safe printer for prototyping of food items.
