While the initial plans for Robonaut2 meant that he would not have a lower body, being attached to a mount inside the International Space Station (ISS), the long term plans included full locomotion. As you can see in the background, the "legs" are nearly completed. These very long and articulated legs allow robonaut to have full mobility inside and outside the ISS. The "feet" are actually special clamps that will grab onto the railings that are currently in place for the astronauts.
Looks to me like NASA is creating "the Borg." I would think one really good application for the completely robotic Borg is to go to the first few missions to Mars, unaccompanied by humans. The disconcerting spider legs might be a good mode for locomotion on Mars.
Then again, if Martians see such monsters coming from Earth, they may object to our ever being there. Esthetics matter, even to extraterrestrials, I'm convinced. First impressions are very important!
Really a great experience and thanks again for sharing. Apart from the Robonauts I like the idea of the robotic gloves a lot!! Why is the head of the Robonauts or the spider legs are having golden colour? I see a lot is the parts in the photos to have golden colour...any special reason that is made for? Any special alloy is used to make those part for special reasons?
