A Networked Smart Energy Home power control system -- for device management and monitoring -- If the Atheros Team can pull it off - That strategy should yield them a solid position in the Home Automation market which dovetails right into the renewable energy system management space. Renewable Energy Solution vendors are deploying power-line solutions. Renewable PV inverter manufacturer, Enphase Energy, with their microinverter product line, enable PV panel management via a power-line solution! If The Atheros Team can execute their technology integration similarly or better than the resulting Sonos calibration, that will be complimentary offering. The Sonos offering is a perfect demonstration of offering wireless consumption of content throughout the home, pricey, but highly functional!

Powerline communications within a given premises is not all that bad in performance. The advantage is that Powerline uses an already existing network. The technology has been in place for quite some time & has matured to a fair level. Powerline can communicate "across the walls" easily & lets u be up & running within no time. I feel it will be a dominant player in the future, albeit, maybe only in certain application areas.

From what I understand about powerline communications, which is admittedly not a lot, it's a really tough environment in which to transmit a signal. So tough, in fact, that some installations in houses or buildings never quite work right. That's why my employer, Broadcom, has stayed away from it. WiMax, too, seems to be a non-starter from our point of view, while LTE looks to be the next big thing in cellular as it builds on what the operators already have installed. But best of luck to Atheros, definitely a worthy adversary.

I don't believe one will oust the other. The win here is a complementary play, and with Atheros's Wi-Fi knowledge and now having the leader in powerline communications in its stable, it would seem it's in a good position to do some good engineering here.

Will Powerline communication take over WiFi in the future, given the scope of immense applications potential & an already existent network ?
