Let’s say you’re developing a new product and getting it to market quickly is your highest priority. What’s the best approach to help your team reach its product introduction goal as fast as possible?
First, go ahead and define the killer product, then plan to deliver 80 percent of it out of the gate. In terms of features, performance, cost, and size, plan to miss your ideal goals by 20 percent.
If you’re smart about what you’re willing to sacrifice on the altar of speed, you’ll still meet the needs of most of the market. By delivering that new product fast, you’ll see less market shift during development and the pressure to add or change features will be reduced.
In addition, you’ll have to do less inventing and the technical risk will be lower. You’ll get fast feedback and your customers will tell you where you really fell short. If it looks like Version 2 is a good idea, you’ll know exactly what to improve. If you’re really smart, you’ll already be working on the hard parts of version 2 before version 1 goes out the door.
