Sensors Expo is opening near Chicago with large crowds and plenty of activity. But as with last year, it's tough to tell whether the show's moniker should be change to ZigBee Expo. The wireless standard seems to have nearly as many booths as the various sensor technologies.
The difference is that while sensors are seeing solid sales growth from a strong base, ZigBee is still waiting for market takeoff. It's hard to think of a market where sensor usage isn't expanding. Advances in many different forms are making it possible to improve precision for industrial control systems. The compact size of emerging sensors, which now routinely put two components in the size previously used for a single sensor.
Unfortunately, the market for ZigBee networks is still as nebulous as it was a year ago. Discussions of ZigBee-like networks continue, while talk of ZigBee shipments still comes with terms like soon, before too long and the proverbial phrase of Chicago Cubs fans, "wait til next year."
