I was pretty fascinated to read the Encyclopedia Britannica's discussion electricity, particularly since I've got the 1768 edition. It goes on for 14 pages, more than twice as much as the section on horses.
In the era when Ben Franklin was a leading scientist, electricity is described as "a fluid capable of uniting with almost every body." Dr. Franklin's kite experiment is described in great detail, as are some of his techniques for reversing polarity. There's also a discussion of medical usage, including electricity's role in restoring movement to a man's paralyzed arm.
Spellbinding reading. Which once again reminds us what an incredible field of science we're involved in.
