A paper describing an application of the IEEE 1588 industrial networking standard to industrial automation outlines the ways in which manufacturers can improve control-system responsiveness and accuracy. An Application of IEEE 1588 to Industrial Automation identifies key industrial applications that can benefit from the Precision Time Protocol defined by IEEE 1588 and discusses how IEEE 1588 can be adopted for those applications.
The applications discussed include logging and scheduling, alarms and events, high-speed inspection, and motion position and velocity control. The paper concludes:
The IEEE 1588 standard is ideal and easily adaptable for distributing a precision time-base to all devices of the control system. The challenge will be to migrate control-system devices particularly I/O to the IEEE 1588 standard and time-based control solutions.
