Industrial Control DesignLine Blog
Recently my nephew celebrated his 15th birthday, prompting many
discussions of what exactly does a teenager want for a birthday.
There were many things discussed, but one thing that did come
up was his wish to build a robot. When I heard this I thought
hey, I'm an electronics engineer, I have to make this happen.
A bit about my background, I was into programming in high school but
there was no robotics club. University was all about
surviving, and my professional engineering career has been in the test
and measurement area. Some soldering and constructing PCBs
here and there. So not a real background in constructing
I asked for some advice from the Focus on MCU subscribers.
The response was absolutely great! (Thank you to all!)
I received many pieces of advice including discussions about
FIRST, Lego Mindstorms, and Junkbots. I am still
contemplating the different options, and compiling answers for an
article. Any further thoughts from the Industrial Control
DesignLine crowd would definitely be appreciated.
In the mean-time, I'm quite busy covering NIweek in Austin.
I'm learning about many exciting engineering projects using
NI tools--many in robotics. I plan on reporting on some of
the interesting projects on display soon. To whet
your appetite here are images of robots that I plan on
