If you're looking to drive large stepper motors that need peak coil currents between 2.5 A and 5 A and voltages between 30 V and 60 V, look no further. Trinamic just put into play a new line of discrete full- and half-bridge MOSFET ICs. When combined as a bundle with the company's TMC262 pre-driver IC, they deliver low minimal power and heat dissipation and the ability to achieve concise PCB designs.
Four versions of the MOSFETs -- the TMC1340, TMC1320, TMC1420, and TMC1620 -- are available in a variety of configurations. They are specifically designed for motors sized between NEMA 24 and 34 that deliver 1.1 to 44 ft-lb of torque.
The MOSFET solutions are CMOS-based and have RDS (on) figures ranging from 40 to 70n milliohms. They can support much higher voltage and current combos. Typically, BICMOS-based solutions have RDS (on) figures between 200 and 600 milliohms, making them suitable only for low current ranges.
The RDS (on) improvement translates to "better power efficiency and lower heat dissipation," Trinamic said in a press release. "And by partitioning the motor pre-driver and power MOSFET bridges into discrete components, designers enjoy greater flexibility in board layout to satisfy both space constraints and power dissipation requirements."
