When an Eqo (pronounced "echo") user dials an international number, software downloaded for free to the phone connects the call to a local Eqo number, as other VoIP providers do for computers.
The Vancouver, British Columbia, startup has an Eqo server convert the user's voice into data packets for transmitting them over the Internet to an Eqo server in the destination country, which puts the call back onto the wireless voice network.
You need another Eqo user with an Eqo account to take advantage of this of course. You just click to dial another online EQO contact in your EQO phonebook, and voila!
You also get free access to most Instant Messaging providers.
