Direct routing

The Wi-Fi Alliance is finishing a 'Wi-Fi Direct' specification that will allow users to to communicate among devices with others without the need to route the data thru a wireless operator.

Wi-Fi Direct will make it easier to liberate the mounting gigabytes of digital family photos that are trapped in cameras, smart phones or PCs. Now those gadgets will be able to connect directly to digital photo frames, TVs or printers.

The Wi-Fi Alliance expects to begin certification for this new specification in mid-2010, and products which achieve the certification will be designated Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct.

The Alliance is moving into Bluetooth territory with higher transfer speed and longer range.

Devices that support the specification will be able to discover one another and advertise available services, said the Alliance.

Are we far away from "Beam me up, Scotty"!
