Macintosh sales were up a whopping 17 percent from the same quarter last year, hitting 3.05 million units. By contrast iPod sales dropped eight percent to 10.2 million units and iPhone sales grew at a relatively sluggish seven percent rate to 7.4 percent.
The figures are cyclical to some extent. Apple just launched a new suite of Macs. But the iPhone 3GS is still a relatively new product, released in June.
Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook said some of the iPhone slowdown was due to a shortage of the latest 3GS handsets now available in 64 of the 80+ countries where Apple sells cellphones. Nevertheless, some analysts expressed concern the rise of attractive iPhone-alike products including Google Android handsets will steal business from Apple.
End of the day, Apple still continues to grow strongly in a down economy with revenues of $9.87 billion and profits of $1.67 billion, both up significantly from the same quarter last year.
