Ad sharing for Android

Will Google actually pay OEMs to use Android? That's what Wall Street analyst turned Silicon Valley venture capitalist Bill Gurly claims in his latest Above the Crowd blog.

Gurly says Google will share ad revenues with at least some of the Android devices that help it put more billboards on the Internet.

I've talked to a few contract designers and chip vendors jumping on the Google bandwagon, but so far no one knows anything about ad-revenue sharing on Android. They are all eager to hear more about it though.

So I asked Google. After percolating on the question a few days, a Google spokeswoman said, "Unfortunately, we can't comment on the specifics of our relationships with partners."

I hate that. All I am asking is to know your policy, your willingness—not confidential details of any specific OEM engagement.

Oh well, that just lets the possibility that OEMs could get paid by Google for making Android devices hang tantalizingly out there in the air, something Google probably loves. It's an idea that has and will continue to fuel the Android mania sweeping the consumer electronics industry, pulling in everyone from small contract design houses to major PC makers like Dell.
