The power of 'Ham'

To the Editor:

I am a subscriber to EE Times, a consultant with an international practice in satellite telecommunications, and an amateur radio operator for 51 years (ticket when I was 15 and the basis for my entire professional career). I have read Bill Schewber's editorial, "Are we becoming a 'Cargo Cult'?". I think not.

Curse of the MBA

To the Editor

I think it would be worthwhile to review the effect of MBAs on technology. It's my opinion that MBAs are contributing to a deterioration of education and innovation in this country. [Those who receive them] are typically risk-adverse, lack creativity, and don't have an entrepreneurial bone in their bodies ("Engineering education study draws industry fire").

Too much equality in education?

To the Editor

One observation: A big part of our problem may be that we try too hard for education equality. ("Engineering education study draws industry fire")The reality is that not everyone is capable of going though a physics program at a college. Most high school serves as a college prep program to some degree.

Word from a recent grad

To the Editor

I must say, as a recently graduated student (June 2005), I completely agree with Mr. Salzman’s findings. I could not find an engineering job (every job opening I have seen in the Seattle area requires at least 2 or more years of experience) without moving halfway across the country and leaving my children behind. Instead, I find myself in a job more oriented towards business pursuits, and each passing day I forget more and more of what I learned in school, sionce it is not reinforced by my job. (I last fired up a spectrum analyzer in March of 2006 and I work for a major manufacturer of two-way radios!)

Discrimination: What's the use?

To the Editor

I started to write a long letter concerning my personal experience, with over 40-plus years as an engineer and 25 years in Silicon Valley with more than 10 different companies. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized, "What's the use?" Some things never change ("Engineering education study draws industry fire").

Just the facts, naysayers

To the Editor

I find it interesting that all the naysayers create their own rather suspect reports to come to the conclusion that we need more foreign engineers ("Engineering education study draws industry fire").

The State of the EE: Sound Off!

Almost 1,600 engineers from around the world responded to the EE Times "2007 Salary Survey." The "State of the Engineer" represents our analysis of this global response. Besides basic salary data, our survey reveals the concerns that keep you and your peers awake at night. It also documents just what makes so many engineers a satisfied lot.

RoHS to the rescue?

To the Editor:

I read with interest your contributing editor, Drew Wilson's, article, "Vendor admits to RoHS misconduct." But there is one thing that never seems to be mentioned in any RoHS Directive article: the unintended effect of these regulations.

Improve results of EE education

To the Editor

Re. your recent article, "Comment: 'Med school' for EEs?", physicians are highly trained people repairmen. They deal with one basic design offered in two models, neither of which ships with a manual. They discover more about how the design works every day, but they never have to worry about retraining for a new system.
