SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Expanding its analog portfolio, Texas Instruments Inc. has acquired Innovative Design Solutions Inc. (IDS) for an undisclosed price.
Based in Melbourne, Fla., IDS designs integrated, high-speed analog products for applications such as test and measurement.
TI, the world's largest analog chip maker, has made a number of acquisitions in the arena. "Analog is at the heart of solving some of the world's most challenging problems and continues to be a significant area in which TI is growing and serving its customers," said Art George, senior vice president for TI's High Performance Analog business unit, in a statement.
As its wireless business weakens due to downward pressures from the high-end consumer market and strategic sourcing changes at a major OEM customer, TI is making a hard turn towards its analog IC business for revenue growth and margin expansion, a move that holds lessons for other companies in the electronics industry.
In the first quarter, analog sales accounted for 41.4 percent of TI's total semiconductor revenue of $3.2 billion, up from less than 40 percent a few years ago.
