DSP core vendor adds JPEG encoders, opens U.S. office

By Peter Clarke

SAN FRANCISCO — Integrated Silicon Systems Ltd. (ISS, Belfast, Northern Ireland) has developed a set of JPEG encoder cores that can operate at image-processing rates in excess of 27 megapixels per second, with application-specific features aimed at securitycamera systems and remote sensing, as well as general imaging.

The cores have been optimized for implementation on programmable-logic devices from Altera Corp. (San Jose, Calif.) and field-programmable gate arrays from Xilinx Inc. (San Jose Calif.). ISS is a member of both Altera's Advanced Megafunction Partners Program and Xilinx's AllianceCore program. Examples of the cores can be implemented in an XC4085 device from Xilinx and an EPF10K100 device from Altera.

As with previously released general-purpose DSP cores from ISS, the JPEG cores are parameterized to allow for customization to meet specific applications.

"The expanding security-imaging market demands high performance to enable images from multiple channels to be compressed and stored digitally in real-time," said James Doherty, chief executive officer of ISS. "The additional features we have embedded into the architecture of these cores enable the source of the image to be clearly identified and prevent the images from being tampered [with] or electronically modified. This gives ISS cores a major advantage over other JPEG encoder solutions currently available."

ISS has also announced that it has established a subsidiary, ISS Technologies Inc., in Santa Clara, Calif. Doug Ridge, formerly with ISS in Belfast, has relocated to California and has been appointed director of business development for North America and Asia.

"System-on-chip demands close liaison between core providers and system integrators," Doherty said. We will grow our U.S. operation quickly to provide efficient customer service in North America and Asia."
