The top stories of the year are based on the number of page views each received during the last 12 months. The results for 2011 underscore the great interest in hybrid and electric vehicle technology and development:
- The Number 1 story, head and shoulders above the others in traffic, is Culture shock: Driving an electric car, about my experience driving, and living with, the Nissan Leaf.
- Number 2 is a tie with Electric hub motor improves EV range: Part 1—Technology basics and Part 2—Manufacturability and practical application.
- Number 3 is Diesels challenge hybrids for efficiency, low emissions
- Number 4 is Special Issue: Inside the Toyota Prius: Part 5 - Inverter/converter is Prius' power broker
- At Number 5 is Driving Impressions: Chevy Volt (My week of driving the Volt shows attention to detail in its design.)
- Tied for 6th are Is there a future for hybrid vehicles? Part 2 (Further hybrid efficiencies are possible, but there is a better way to go—fuel cells?) and Teardown and repair reveals design choices in Dodge key fob (Keyless auto entry systems offer convenience and safety, but turn terribly inconvenient when a key fob fails. Just such an occurrence prompted this story on the teardown and repair of a key fob.)
- Tied at Number 7 are 8-bit MCUs provide cost effective, efficient high-brightness LED control (not an easy task) and How Bluetooth, UWB, and 802.11 stack up on power consumption (important for energy efficiency and battery life).
- Number 8 is Driving Impressions: Prius Plug-In Hybrid With a relatively short time to charge, the hybrid plug-in Prius is, in effect, an around-town electric vehicle.
- Tied for Number 9 is Innovation revelation: Engineering the Chevy Volt. For engineers, development of the Chevy Volt is a ripping yarn which has been likened to a program of "moon shot" proportions. Sharing the ninth slot is Plan strategies for adopting Model-Based Design for embedded applications: Part 1—Challenges and impact. When transitioning to Model-Based Design for embedded systems development, it is essential to consider an overall plan spanning people, development processes, and tools.
- At Number 10 is Monitoring systems ensure Li-ion battery safety and efficiency. These devices also maximize performance and capacity usage of EV and hybrid car batteries.

What I noticed was that there were many stories relating to the use of electric and hybrid vehicles. This could mean there is a steady gain in interest in electric cars, as either people want to know more about them, or people who own them want to know how to get more out of them. All these are good news, as it means we could see greater public acceptance for these green vehicles. Stories about the various auto parts round up the rest of the list, such as LED lightings and batteries.
