NXP offers automotive Class-D amplifier

LONDON – NXP Semiconductors NV has announced the availability of a stereo Class-D audio amplifier that can provide 136 watts into two by 8 ohms for use in automobiles where high power output is required.
NXP (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) said the TDF8599C works from a supply voltage of between 8 volts and 48 volts and drives two 8-ohm to 6-ohm bridge-tied load (BTL) channels or one 4-ohm/3-ohm BTL channel.
The TDF8599C is supplied in an SOT851-2 package known as an HSOP36. This is a plastic small outline package with heatsink, low stand-off height and 36 leads dual in line.
The audio amplifier uses differential inputs and includes an output stage based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) BCDMOS manufacturing process. The gain is selectable up to 32-dB and the part is qualified in accordance with AEC-Q100.
The TDF8599C can operate in either non-I2C-bus mode or I2C-bus mode. When in I2C-bus mode, DC load detection results and fault conditions can be read back from the device. Up to 15 I²C-bus addresses can be selected depending on the value of the external resistors connected to pins ADS and MOD.
There are tweeter and clip detect functions and independent short-circuit protection for each channel. There is also a thermal protection warning, NXP states.
NXP did not provide pricing information. The chip is available but the datasheet is not, according to NXP's website.

I find it really bizarre that the chip is available but the datasheet is not! How is anyone supposed to use it or consider it for a design without the datasheet? I really like the power and wonder what the sound specifications are going to be.

The automotive electronic market will look for new and more integrated IC parts to increase the overall reliability by reducing the part count and there by defects.

Today's standard amps are 50x4, I wonder is 136x2 stereo is actually 136x4? If so, thats a teremendous boost, and quite close to my Sony home theatre at 135x4. Guessing sub-woofer would need a seperate driver, maybe with this kind of power, subs wont be needed. Challenge would be to get door integrated speakers able to translate this much power into distortion-less sound, and without rattling the door hinges ;-)
