"The BroadR-Reach standard is a good example. BroadR-Reach is a Broadcom standard for automotive Ethernet on twisted-pair wiring. Automotive suppliers are coming to us and saying they want us to supply them because in automotive we are trusted partners," Freeman said. As a result NXP is offering automotive Ethernet PHY chips under license.
IEEE.802.11p is an automotive variant of Wi-Fi that could be used for car-to-car communications, Freeman said. "802.11p does not exist in production but is being demonstrated," he added.
In the area of emerging automotive technologies NXP it expects to benefit from the adoption of LED lighting. It has sales in LED drivers for domestic solid-state lighting and wants to leverage that into the automotive market.

However, as is often the case, the really good news is a few quarters away. Freeman reckons that the automotive market overall is going to be flat to potentially down in 2012 in a similar pattern to the total global semiconductor sales. "We know car production is up year-on-year so we suspect some sort of inventory effect," said Freeman. Nonetheless the subset of the general market that NXP is targeting should be showing greater CAGR than the overall market and Freeman expects NXP to do better than that and grow market share.
