Chevy Volt 'recalled'
Just after New Year's, General Motors, which had wrestled with the fallout from fires in two Chevy Volt lithium-ion battery packs, recalled the car for voluntary repairs to the battery.
The Volt's lithium-ion battery pack became the focus of a federal safety investigation after the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration conducted a crash test last spring on one Volt. Weeks after the crash test, the Volt, sitting in an outside parking lot, caught fire, which started in the battery. The impact had breached the battery's liquid cooling system, causing a short, which caused a fire.
The NHTSA later in the year replicated the fault twice.
A few weeks after GM's announcement, the federal government--satisifed with engineers' metal-shielding fix for the battery--ended its safety investigation into the Volt's battery.
It wouldn't, however, be the last time a battery manufacturer had problems in 2012.

I'd say the Tesla Model S winning Motor Trend COTY would be my #1. Perhaps that makes the 2013 list?

Back in 1960, when I was a young EE, I was told then there was a great more energy storage capability in a tablespoon of gasoline than in a typical car lead acid battery.
Question to anyone out there. Where are we now as to the gasoline tablespoon vs the car lead acid battery?
To me that is the bottom line as to 100% electric cars ---- the batteries. So far I am for the hybrid approach for electric cars.
