ST, Hyundai team up to develop powertrain

PARIS – STMicroelectronics NV and Hyundai Autron, the electronics subsidiary of Hyundai Motors Group of Korea, have said they are collaborating to develop electronic control systems for Hyundai’s vehicles.

ST and Hyundai Autron explained that they are initially focusing on semiconductors for powertrain applications and particularly for engine management units. Then, they said they will explore other applications.

Asked for details on future applications, Marco Monti, ST's executive vice president, general manager automotive product group, said: "The cooperation will cover many applications of the car. At the moment, the two companies will only publicly discuss the engine control. As we progress in the joint effort, other applications may be disclosed."

The partners said they will start with using ST’s existing application-specific standard products (ASSPs) in new-generation vehicles expected to sample later this year. "The first step of the cooperation will use ST products that are already in production or in the qualification phase," Monti confirmed. "We will not disclose any specifics now."

Discussing the next step, Monti said that ST and Hyundai will co-design products for Hyundai’s vehicles that will meet Hyundai’s specifications and requirements.

ST specified that it will bring its smart-power technologies, including BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS), to the collaboration. These are said to enable integration of interface, control, and communication functions together with the power-driver section and a cost-effective implementation of distributed intelligence.
