LONDON – Graphics core licensor Imagination Technologies Group plc has added the PowerVR G6100 to its Series 6 family of GPUs, known as Rogue. The latest core has been area optimized and provides a single GPU cluster, Imagination said.
This is in contrast to established Series 6 cores such as the G6200 and G6400 Series6 cores that have two and four compute clusters respectively. Imagination (Kings Langley, England) claims that no other graphics core provides the breadth of features or performance of G6100 in as efficient a silicon footprint.
Imagination did not indicate for which manufacturing process technology node the G6100 has been designed.
The PowerVR Series 6 family of GPU cores addresses mobile and embedded applications such as smartphones and tablet computers and has been submitted for compliance with OpenGL ES 3.0 API stipulated by the Khronos Group.
G6100 is designed to enable high-quality graphics and efficient GPU compute performance for mobile solutions where area is limited but advanced OpenGL ES 3.0 graphics performance is still desired, Imagination said.
PowerVR Series 6 graphics cores support GPU compute APIs including OpenCL 1.x and Renderscript Compute/Filterscript. PowerVR Series 6 GPUs also support DirectX9.3/10, with certain family members extending their capabilities to DirectX11.1 functionality.
"We believe G6100 will drive mass market adoption of OpenGL ES 3.0 capable ultra-portable mobile devices, from mass-market smartphones to exciting new categories like wearable computers," said Tony King-Smith, executive vice president of marketing at Imagination, in a statement.
