PARIS – The global bioMEMS market is expected to almost triple in size, from $1.9 billion in 2012 to $6.6 billion in 2018, according to market research firm Yole Développement (Lyon, France). Mobile care applications will contribute significantly to this growth.

Microsystems have gained a foothold in the healthcare markets, said Yole, specifying that they provide double benefits. Firstly, microsystems improve medical device performance for the patient and, secondly, they provide competitive advantages to system manufacturers.

Microsystems devices have applications in four healthcare markets, namely pharmaceutical, in-vitro diagnostics, medical devices and medical home care. In its latest report, titled BioMEMS 2013, Yole explains that each market has its own players, dynamics and market drivers.

While the acceptance of microsystems relies on sensibility and automation constraints in the pharmaceutical market, in the in-vitro diagnostic market it’s all about portability and cost reduction. The medical devices market is focused on addition of functionalities while the home care market is concerned about system safety and connectivity, Yole said.
