SAN FRANCISCO--Spansion Inc. said this week (Nov. 12) it will sample the industry's first single-die 8 Gb NOR flash memory product at 45 nm in December. Volume production of the Spansion GL-T, using the company's MirrorBit charge-trapping technology, is expected some time in the first quarter of 2013.

Dawn Hopper, Spansion's director of strategic marketing, said the company at first will market the device in the gaming, industrial automotive and healthcare markets with eye toward improving the video experience for users.

"The one thing (those applications) have in common is video.. and pushing video to the end user," Hopper said. "The end user is then selecting some video interactivity via the device. We're striving to make that faster with NOR's fast read time."

Hopper said over the coming months, Spansion will fill out the GL-T's family by driving into lower densities--all the way down to 256Mb. She declined to say what the next density release would be.

Features:

  • Read performance of the Spansion GL-T at 8Gb is 95 MegaBytes per second (MB/s) and program performance is 1.8 MB/s.
  • Manufactured on advanced 300 mm wafers.
