Design calculations for robust I2C communications

It’s not enough to have ultra-reliable, uber-high-density memory. Unless you can get data on and off the chip as quickly as your application requires, the best memory in the world is useless. Fortunately, designers can choose from a range of communications buses, including I2C, SPI, Microwire, and the UNI/O bus. Fueled by widespread hardware support in microcontrollers and other chipsets, as well as ease of implementation, the I2C bus has captured roughly 70% of the nonvolatile memory market. Its performance is only as good as its implementation, however. In "Design calculations for robust I2C communications," Chris Parris and Jonathan Dillon of Microchip Technology Inc. tell you what you need to know about choosing the right pull-up resistor and other design considerations to ensure that your system delivers the results you seek.
