ARM sets next GPU target at 240 million units

LONDON – Mali GPU shipments are expected to exceed 240 million units in 2013, a growth of about 60 percent from more than 150 million units shipped in 2012, according to ARM executives in the media processing division.

This would come after Mali total volume shipments, as reported by ARM partners, had grown from less than 50 million Mali-enabled SoCs in 2011 to over 150 million units in 2012. In 2012, over 95 percent of the Mali graphics processors shipped, did so alongside one of the ARM Cortex-A series processors.

As a result of this growth ARM's Mali GPUs can now be found in more than 70 percent of graphics-enabled digital TVs, in more than 50 percent of all Android tablets and in about 20 percent of Android smartphones, the company estimates.

"This impressive market growth has been achieved by only a quarter of the current Mali licensees," said Pete Hutton, general manager of the ARM media processing division, in a statement. ARM now has about Mali 75 licenses.
