Editor's note: We're pleased to present, in serial form, Chapter 9 of RF Front-End: World Class Designs, edited by Janine Sullivan Love. This nearly 500-page book will be of interest to almost any engineer involved with RF (and IF) circuits. It covers RF front-end design from antenna and filter -design fundamentals to optimized layout techniques, with a strong pragmatic emphasis. The book also discusses various approaches to solving RF front-end design problems and how to successfully apply theory to actual design tasks. The material has been selected for its timelessness as well as for its relevance to contemporary RF front- end design issues. The editor is well-known in the RF/IF field and has applied her years of experience in the selection of the material.
The Table of Contents shows the breadth of coverage:
- Chapter 1: Radio waves and propagation
- Chapter 2: RF Front End Design
- Chapter 3: Radio Transmission Fundamentals
- Chapter 4: Advanced Architectures
- Chapter 5: RF Power Amplifiers
- Chapter 6: RF Amplifiers
- Chapter 7: Basics of PA Design
- Chapter 8: Power Amplifiers
- Chapter 9: RF/IF Circuits
- Chapter 10: Filters
- Chapter 11: Transmission Lines and PCBs as Filters
- Chapter 12: Tuning and Matching
- Chapter 13: Impedance Matching
- Chapter 14: RF Power Linearization Techniques
We are presenting all of Chapter 9, authored by Hank Zumbahlen, in seven parts. Since the chapter is long, each serialized part is substantial by itself:
- Section 9.1: Mixers, click here
- Section 9.2: Modulators and Section 9.3: Analog Multipliers, here
- Section 9.4: Logarithmic Amplifiers, here
- Section 9.5: Tru-Power Detectors and Section 9.6: VGAs, here
- Section 9.7: Direct Digital Synthesis, here
- Section 9.8: PLLs (first half), here
- Section 9.8: PLLs (second half) and Bibliography, will be posted online October 5
The book is published by Elsevier/Newnes, ISBN 978-1-85617-622-4, copyright 2009, excerpted with permission, all rights reserved.
