The United States Air Force has introduced the Space Fence program to increase its surveillance capability.
The Space Fence program aims to provide a radar system operating in the S-band frequency range to replace the U.S. Air Force Space Surveillance System (AFSSS) VHF “Fence” radar that has been tracking satellites and orbiting space objects since 1961. The Space Fence will have a modern, net-centric architecture that is capable of detecting much smaller objects in low/medium Earth orbit (LEO/MEO).
A prototype of the radar system, which is being developed by aerospace firm Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Air Force, has successfully detected orbiting space junks, company officials claimed in March. The Air Force also approved Lockheed's preliminary design for the system on Feb. 29.
