PARIS – Aerospace and automotive firm Rolls-Royce has announced plans to close its UK defense operations in Ansty, England, near Coventry, resulting in 378 job losses.

The UK’s largest union, Unite, called on the government urgently to draw up a coherent defense industrial strategy so as to avoid further high-skilled job losses.

Ian Waddell, Unite national officer for aerospace and shipbuilding, commented: “The underlying reason for the job losses is the government's defense spending cuts announced a couple of years ago. Unite will be seeking an early meeting with management to discuss the implications for our members and we will taking every step to safeguard their employment now and in the future.”

The Rolls-Royce plant at Ansty employs more than 800 people in aerospace repair and overhaul, power engineering and other entities that produce components.
