Delivering optimized motor control for 1.5-kW applications with a uMini-DIP package

Manufacturers of household electric appliances, especially appliances with motor drives are being required by worldwide energy regulations to find new solutions that help improve the energy efficiency of their products.
In order to meet these regulatory requirements, the use of inverters is one solution for improved energy efficiency. But the use of inverters causes several problems designers need to be aware of, including complicated circuitry design, increased application board size, increased manufacturing costs, as well as reliability and productivity issues, to name a few.

This article examines at the worldwide regulatory environment, as well as how inverterized motor control can improve efficiency. While it focuses on Fairchild’s newest Motion-SPM family, the µMini-DIP SPM series—which offers an alternative solution to designers, and benefits compared with traditional methodologies—it also looks at related packaging, thermal analysis, and other technical issues, and outlined the various solutions currently employed by electric appliances with motor drives.

It is obvious that using a well designed inverter drive will improve efficiency of a product, but it is considerably less clear how adding a very large number of electronic components, all selected for minimum cost, assembled in the least expensive manner possible, and including an MCU having a large amount of code developed with the minimum possible cost, can be an improvement in reliability, unless the comparison is against a similar but more complex system.
I was hoping for an article with more discussion of power inverters driving motors.
