Mobile drives Dialog profit higher

LONDON – Revenue at mixed-signal, power and RF chip vendor Dialog Semiconductor plc in the fourth quarter of 2012 was $268 million, as previously forecast, representing a year-on-year increase of 56 percent and a sequential increase of 49 percent over 3Q12.

The very strong year end was driven by design-wins for Dialog (Kirchheim-unter-Teck, Germany) in mobile phones and tablet computers and helped Dialog report a full-year revenue of $773.6 million, up 47 percent on 2011. The mobile part of Dialog's business recorded revenues of $639 million for the full year 2012, up 72 percent compared to the prior year.

For 4Q12 Dialog made net profit of $30.2 million, up 53 percent on the same quarter a year before. Full the full year the net income was $62.5 million, up 9 percent on 2011. One of the strong contributors to profit was that Dialog was able to increase the average selling price of its chips from from $1.70 in 2011 to nearly $2 in 2012.

At the end of the year Dialog had cash and cash equivalents balance of $312.4 million.

Dialog expects sales in 1Q13 of between $177 million and $187 million, reflecting a seasonally low quarter and partially driven by a lull after late surge in demand for smartphone and tablet products at the end of 2012. However, while 1Q13 may be relatively quiet Dialog said it expects revenue growth for the full year and anticipates a strong second half driven by the ramp of another set of consumer products.
