Here is the list of the Top 10 Design Articles posted on Smart Energy Designline in the first half of 2012, as determined by your page views.

1. Selecting the right battery
By Pushek Madaan and Rajiv Badiger, Cypress
In Part One of this two-part article, Cypress engineers describe different types of rechargeable batteries, their differences and how to select a battery technology for a specific application.

2. Home sweet smart home
By Sean Murphy, Texas Instruments
With energy costs as a top concern and the proliferation of connected electronic products, the need for a connected smart home and smart meter is more real than ever. In short, the smart grid and the smart home network need to evolve to the next level to meet user demands.

3. Supercaps can be a good choice over batteries for backup applications
By Steve Knoth, Linear Technology Corporation
The niche that supercapacitors (also known as ultra-capacitors or supercaps) have served in the market space between conventional capacitors and batteries continues to grow as more new applications are found.

4. Energy harvesting, wireless sensor networks & opportunities for industrial applications
By Sebastien Boisseau and Ghislain Despesse, CEA-Leti
With the will to increase the number of sensors around us and to respect several economic and environmental constraints, researchers and R&D engineers are looking for new green and unlimited energy sources that will allow to remove batteries or wires and to develop autonomous wireless sensor networks with theoretical unlimited lifetimes. These new sources are based on ambient energy.

5. Reducing energy cost of intra-chip communications
By Fabien Clermidy, Ivan Miro-Panades, Yvain Thonnart and Pascal Vivet, CEA-Leti
Communications now account for up to 30 percent of overall energy consumption in the highest performing many-core architectures.

6. Modern power line communication for the smart grid
By Ivan Gatchev, product marketing staff engineer, STMicroelectronics
From the early usage of Power Line Communication, in Automatic Meter Reading, to replace the technician from the utility company, reading power meters in person, with an automated process, the industry has come a long way.

7. Smart street lighting
By A. Bruno, F. Di Franco, G. Rasconà, C. Ruggieri, STMicroelectronics
A smart street lighting system allows to remotely control street lights while keeping track of electrical power consumption in the lamps and in the driving circuits

8. Vibration energy harvesting for wireless sensor networks: Assessments and perspectives
By Sebastien Boisseau and Ghislain Despesse, CEA-Leti
Thanks to the reduction of circuit sizes and progress in microelectronics, basic electronic functions are consuming less and less power, allowing us to use a new ecological and durable supply source for wireless sensor networks: ambient energy, including sun, temperature and vibration.

9. Implementing battery charger using Li-ion
By Pushek Madaan and Rajiv Badiger, Cypress
In Part Two of this two-part article, Cypress engineers discuss how to implement a battery charger using Li-Ion technology.

10. Teardown: The power inverter - from sunlight to power grid
By Steve Taranovich, EDN Contributing Editor
This teardown article will delve into the architectural design and components of a solar inverter card starting from the Solar panel DC inputs and working our way through the DC to AC conversion process to the AC output that is sent out to the power grid. We will show what features need to be implemented into such a design to meet various safety and other performance standards as well as stringent power company demands upon the signal that is put onto their grid.
