Lighting startup to show LED controller IC

LONDON – Ikon Semiconductor Ltd. (Dublin, Ireland), a fabless semiconductor company chasing LED lighting opportunities, has said it will show a digital LED controller IC at the upcoming Strategies in Light Conference, taking place in Santa Clara, Calif.

The IKS2053 is an ac-to-dc switch-mode power supply controller IC for LED drivers. It is a single-stage controller IC that is designed to sweep up a number of components into a single IC that could offer a retrofit dimmable feature for LED light bulbs.

The company did not state where it is getting the IC made or what generation of process technology it is using.

The 8-pin SOIC provides universal mains operation at voltages up to 265-V ac and 85 percent conversion efficiency. It offers adaptive quasi-resonant operation and user optimization of power factor correction and output current ripple.

Startup current is typically 20-microamps and protection against over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature is built in.

"Retrofit momentum is high, which presents a substantial market opportunity for Ikon Semiconductor. Added to this, our advanced dim-detect engine enables broad dimmer compatibility – an essential feature in a market saturated with disparate dimmer products," said Conor McAuliffe, Ikon Semiconductor's CEO and co-founder. Ikon was founded in January 2009.
