Staying current with the vast amount of information necessary to make critical component selections can be an overwhelming task for engineers and purchasing professionals.
To help facilitate that process, Information Handling Services (IHS) and Microcom Technologies are working to integrate their CAPSXpert and Partminer products.
CAPSXpert is a family of electronic-component databases that offer information on more than 14 million parts from more than 1,500 manufacturers of semiconductors, passives, multipin cylindrical connectors, and printed-circuit-board connectors. All CAPSXpert databases are parametrically searchable and include links to over 1.8 million images and documents.
CAPSXpert has been available to users on CD-ROM, and was recently transitioned into a Web-based offering as well. While CAPSXpert has been a leading source for component information, the product has lacked the functionality to continue the sourcing process, said Dan Nissanoff, president of Microcom Technologies, New York.
Microcom developed and launched Partminer, an online application that "mines" distributor Web sites for inventory information.
Nissanoff said that while an engineer or purchaser could use CAPSXpert to identify which parts would work within the specified design, there was no information on part pricing and availability.
To find and procure those parts, the user had to go to the Internet, search for the manufacturer of the parts, find authorized distributors of that manufacturer's products, and then search the distributors sites for pricing and availability information.
By integrating Partminer within the CAPSXpert databases, specifiers, engineers, and buyers can now compare components by technical characteristics across manufacturers, as well as identify suppliers that can deliver the desired components.
"Purchasing professionals spend hours jumping from site to site searching for pricing and delivery information on specific devices," said Pat Romich, president of IHS Engineering Products, Englewood, Colo. (www.ihs.com). "With Partminer, users can quickly search multiple distributor's sites and deliver critical purchasing information in seconds."
The first phase of the integration of the technologies will entail working Partminer functionality within CAPSXpert CD ROM and Web offerings. The two companies will then work on integrating portions of the CAPSXpert database, including select product descriptions and product cross references, into Partminer.
