The Digital Flat Panel (DFP) interface standard for LCD monitors -- one of several competing specifications -- was approved yesterday by the Video Electronics Standards Association.
The DFP standard is embraced by Compaq Computer, ViewSonic, 3dfx Interactive, Creative Labs, Pixelworks, S3, VideoLogic, Matrox Graphics, ATI, and AMP. A rival standard, an extension of the USB interface, has been drafted by the Digital Display Working Group, which includes Intel, Dell Computer, IBM, and other OEMs.
The two groups have tried unsuccessfully to agree on a common standard for digital FPD monitors. With two contending specifications, there is fear of another VHS-Beta confrontation and confusion in the market.
