Advanced Micro Devices Inc. named S. Atiq Raza president and chief operating officer, replacing industry veteran Richard Previte.
Raza, 50, most recently served as executive vice president, co-chief operating officer, and chief technical officer, the Sunnyvale, Calif. chip maker said Friday. He will retain the CTO title and continue as a board member.
Raza joined the company in 1996 when AMD acquired NexGen, Inc., where he was chairman, chief executive and president.
Previte,an AMD executive since 1969, took over the president and COO positions about nine years ago. He will stay on as AMD's vice chairman and will also retain the chairman and acting CEO titles at Vantis, AMD's programmable logic subsidiary which is being acquired by Lattice.
Additionally, AMD announced that Robert Palmer waselected to the company's board. Palmer, 58, was the chairman and chief executive of Digital Equipment Corp., and negotiated
the 1998 merger of Digital with Compaq Computer Corp. He is also a member of AlliedSignal Inc.'s board.
