The fledgling plasma display panel (PDP) joint venture of Fujitsu Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. is building a new plant in Kunitomi, Japan, with an expected capacity of 60,000 panels a month.
The new fab initially will produce 42-in. screens for televisions. Officials said other markets will include large displays for public areas and high-end computer applications.
The new facility will augment the joint venture's existing PDP fab at the same site, which has a 10,000-panel-per-month capacity. The new fab is expected to start production in October 2000.
Separately, Hitachi said it will build a new thin-film-transistor LCD production line at its existing plant in Mobara, Japan. The new line is expected to begin production in the second half of fiscal 2001 with a capacity of 40,000 panels a month.
The company intends to invest about $270 million in the next year for the new line and to upgrade the existing fab at Mobara. The present facility has a capacity of 230,000 14-in. panel equivalents per month.
