BURNABY, British Columbia -- Looking to lower the cost of networks, PMC-Sierra Inc. here today rolled out a mapper/framer chip set designed for use in applications of 622 megabits per second.
The new Spectra-622 chip set enables OEMs to develop a channelized mapper/framer solution on a single board. Previously, OEMs were forced to use as many as 10 cards to deliver similar performance in their systems.
"Bandwidth requirements are quadrupling every 15 to 18 months, but OEMs are under pressure to develop products with the same board size," said Steve Perna, vice president and general manager of the Transmission Switching Division at LAN/WAN-chip specialist PMC-Sierra.
While the majority of boxes shipping today are employed in OC-12 applications, PMC-Sierra is developing mapper/framer devices to solve future bandwidth issues in OC-48 (2.5 gigabits per second) and OC-192 (10-Gbits/s) networks, according to Perna.
Targeted at supporting transmission speeds from DS-O (64 Kbits/s) to OC-12/STM4 (622 Mbits/s), the chip set is geared toward a variety of LAN/WAN equipment, including multiservice add/ drop multiplexers, switches, routers, concentrators, central-office digital cross-connect systems, and other products.
It also provides OEMs a one-stop shop for LAN/WAN components. The chip set can be used in conjunction with PMC-Sierra's existing products, which include ATM devices and HDLC processors.
The chip set consists of the PM5313 Spectra-622, the PM5363 TUPP+622, and the PM5365 TEMAP.
The PM5313 is a SONET/SDH-based payload extractor/ aligner, which features a serializer/deserializer, a clock-recovery unit, and a clock-synthesis function on the same device. The PM5363 is a multichannel pointer-processing device, while the PM5365 chip provides the mapping functions.
All three devices are currently available. In volume quantities, the PM5313, shipped in a 520-pin SBGA package, is priced at $349. The PM5363, housed in a 304-pin SBGA, sells for $480, and the PM5365, which is shipped in a 324-pin pitch PBGA, is priced at $149.
