RED BANK, N.J. -- In a move to add more capabilities to its core DSL-chip line, GlobeSpan Inc. has acquired Ficon Technology Inc., a software provider for packet-data applications, for about $90 million in stock and cash.
With Ficon, based in Woodbridge, N.J., GlobeSpan obtains a software offering for Internet Protocol, ATM, and voice-over-packet applications. The software could play a key role in GlobeSpan's efforts to provide a voice-over-DSL solution, according to the company.
"The combined strengths of GlobeSpan and Ficon will give our customers a compelling and comprehensive offering to their DSL-solution requirements," said Armando Geday, president and CEO of GlobeSpan. "This acquisition is designed to further enhance GlobeSpan's position in the fast-growing broad-band infrastructure market."
Founded in 1996, Ficon Technology provides products and system solutions in switches and routers, ATM edge and core switches, DSL modems, and DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs).
The acquisition will be accounted for as a purchase transaction. The maximum cumulative purchase price is approximately $90 million, including a $5 million cash component.
