CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Extending its reach in the LAN/WAN-chip market, Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. here has acquired Orologic Inc. for about $450 million in common stock.
With the acquisition of Orologic, based in Morrisville, N.C., Vitesse gains a quick entry into high-end switch-fabric chip and related LAN/WAN-chip markets.
Orologic, a three-year-old fabless-IC design house, recently announced its first product, PackMaker 2, a switch-fabric chip designed for use in 2.5- and 10-Gbit/s networking applications.
"The Vitesse-Orologic combination extends our OC-48 product portfolio [and adds] extensive traffic-management features for Layer 2 through 7 processing of multiservice ATM and IP switches," said Lou Tomasetta, president and chief executive of Vitesse. Orologic is expected to be folded into Vitesse.
The deal should be completed next month.
