In a move to complete its mid-tier distribution channel in North America, U.K. power-supply maker Newport Components has signed an agreement with Reptron Electronics Inc., Tampa, Fla.
The agreement covers Newport's entire range of power and magnetic products, including DC-DC converters, transformers and inductors, for the company's industrial and telecom customer base.
Reptron's strong field application engineers (FAE) program was the most appealing strength for Newport, said Rob Hill, the British company's ice president of global sales and marketing,
"Newport product is a technical product requiring technical people to sell it and design it in, so a strong FAE program was a pre-requisite for the selection of a company with strong national presence in the United States," said Hill.
Reptron was named the third largest power products distributor in the country by EBN's Top 50 Distributors. It has 22 sales offices in the United States and sells to over 7,000 customers.
Reptron's nation-wide coverage fills in the geographical gaps with Newport's existing U.S. mid-tier representative, ForeSight Electronics Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., said Hill. "We felt Reptron didn't clash with Foresight, because Foresight is very focused on power products, whereas Reptron is broad-line," he said. According to Hill, Reptron covers regional areas in the country that Foresight doesn't.
Newport also holds agreements with catalogue distributors Newark Electronics, Chicago, and Mouser Electronics, Mansfield, Texas.
Hill said the company isn't looking to further expand its U.S. distribution channel.
"At the moment we're happy with the distribution channel," he said. "But nobody can ever predict events in the channel itself and what bearing they may have, but we're happy for the moment."
Newport has reported annual world-wide sales of $19 million and has a North-Carolina-based subsidiary, Newport Components Inc.
