Microsemi Corp. has formed an alliance with Advanced Power Technology Inc. (APT) to create semiconductor products for implantable medical applications, such as pacemakers and defibrillators.
Under the agreement, Microsemi will have exclusive rights to market and sell semiconductors resulting from the joint-development efforts of the companies. These products will include IGBTs and MOSFETs.
"We are continually looking for ways of expanding our product offering to our niche markets, and these products will significantly expand Microsemi's portfolio of devices for implantable medical applications," said Philip Frey, president and chief executive officer of Microsemi (Santa Ana, Calif.), a leading supplier of diodes, transient voltage suppressors and thyristors.
APT produces high-power, high-voltage MOSFETs and IGBTs for commercial, industrial and military applications. APT's patented Power MOS technology offers "unique features that can be useful to implantable device manufacturers," according to the two companies.
