Responding to increasing demand for high-resolution LCDs in mobile and handheld products, Tokyo-based Sharp Corp. will begin display production at its Mie Plant #3 in Mie Prefecture, Japan, in June rather than October as originally scheduled.
The plant is slated to produce the equivalent of 4 million 2in. displays per month, using 730 x 920mm glass substrates. It joins a plant in Tenri, Nara Prefecture opened last October that produces 2.5 million 2in. displays per month using 620 x 750mm substrates.
Sharp will employ several advanced technologies in the displays, including continuous grain silicon, advanced TFT-LCD, and three-dimensional LCD.
