Taipei, Taiwan Silicon foundry United Microelectronics Corp. said it is scaling back its planned capital expenditures this year, but suggested that it will build out its 300-mm wafer capacity in 2004 faster than originally planned.
Earlier this year, UMC said it would spend $500 million on its fabs, plus $200 million on its UMCi venture in Singapore and 15 billion yen on UMC Japan. Last week the company said it will cut fab spending to $350 million.
UMC also reported third-quarter results last week. Revenue decreased 0.8 percent from the second quarter to $638 million, up 12.5 percent from a year ago. Profit hit $124 million, up 56 percent from the second quarter and up 195 percent from a year ago.
